This document is broken up into 3 parts. Economics, Foreign policy, and Social issues. The point is to take each set of issues and find the greatest compromise that helps and is supported by the greatest number of Americans. I am neither a democrat nor a republican. I am not religious but I try understand the needs and wants of those who are.
I urge my fellow citizens not to vote for anyone who doesn't support most of the following things. These ideas are in the best interest of us American citizens.
Economics:
The goal of this economic policy to appease everyone but do what is necessary. Right now the deficit debate is ridiculous because both parties are wrong and right. The republicans are correct about cutting spending because the deficit is out of control. However they are wrong to assume that cutting spending without increasing revenue will do much of anything. That is where the democrats are correct in wanting to increase taxes. However its important to understand who should be taxed and what the government should be spending money on.
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. said “Taxes are the price we pay for civilized society.” Taxes have paid for everything from the interstate system to national parks, the moon landing and the liberation of France. In fact, Eisenhower, a Republican, presided over an era where corporate taxes accounted for a quarter of all federal tax receipts, and the richest Americans still enjoyed their wealth while paying a 90% top tax rate. Americans were never more prosperous as a whole than during that era. Now, loopholes and lobbying have lowered the top tax rate to its lowest point since the Truman era, and corporate tax dollars only count for 5-7% of all federal tax receipts.
After the Great Depression, our leaders had a vision for America. They fought to see ours was a country where everyone was afforded the opportunity for free basic education, an affordable home, a steady income and free healthcare for the poor and the elderly. FDR took to the airwaves in his last months of life to push for a second bill of rights that guaranteed all of these things and more. MLK called for an economic bill of rights to be drafted in 1967 that guaranteed Americans a fair standard of living.
Instead, the American people who pay taxes and abide by the laws put before us are seeing these essential pillars of American democratic society crumble to pieces. The same corporations who pay for the campaigns of our elected officials and own the mainstream media are instead allowed the opportunity to not only avoid paying their fair share to participate in society, but also to spend millions lobbying our leaders to continue avoiding their obligation.
We’re constantly bombarded by rhetoric about how businesses are “obligated” by their shareholders to avoid taxes at all costs. Talking heads on TV constantly deride America’s corporate tax rate, calling for it to be lowered so we can be more “competitive.” Yet, the aforementioned corporations paid close to, and in some cases more than America’s marginal 35% corporate tax rate. And each year, they continue to be extremely profitable without dodging taxes through offshore accounts.
What if today’s corporations abided by a more sustainable business culture, where taxes are seen as an investment in their country rather than something to avoid? What if those investments could pay for nationwide poverty relief? Or cross-country green energy infrastructure? If NASA had the money to carry out a Mars landing, instead of a moon landing? If we could guarantee high-quality free public education to ALL students, regardless of zip code.
If an American business wants to employ our workers, use our infrastructure, and depend on us to make them prosperous, they should be required to pay our taxes. Our leaders must reform our tax laws to reinforce that standard. Let’s hold government and businesses accountable to the American people — the real shareholders.
Tax Reform
- Flat tax rate that varies on income bracket
- ie. $250,000+ pay 20%, $100,000-$249,999 pay 24%, $0,000-100,000 pay 28%(These numbers aren't exact, only a rough estimate of a breakdown)
- No exemptions(this keeps things simple and disallows loopholes)
- However across the board increases will need to happen. Spending cuts are definitely necessary but we also need to increase revenue to make up for the deficit. A combination of reduced spending and increased revenue will fill up the deficit.
- Taxes for wealth citizens are kept lower so that things are fair but corporations will pay a decent share of taxes. Its ridiculous that a company like GM paid little to no taxes last year. Bussiness that make more than $1 billion dollars per year need to pay around 40% of their profits to taxes if not more.
- Small Businesses(those that generate less then $10 million per year) should pay little to no taxes since they need that money to reinvest in their business
- Introduction of a tariff on all goods imported from American businesses that use unfairly cheap Chinese labour. If business are going to outsource our jobs to China and India then we shouldn't allow them to benefit. The tariff should be high enough to nullify any benefit they get from outsourcing.
- Businesses that hire mostly American workers and are located in the U.S. will get a small(keyword small) tax break as an incentive.
- increase in the social security payroll tax. The reason why social security is so under funded is that over the last 30 years not enough money has been contributed to it and too much money has been tapped into to fund other projects. The baby boomers who are about to retire or are retiring have not paid enough money into the system over their careers to really deserve the benefits they are about to receive. either they take a benefit cut or a payroll tax increase needs to be implemented. A combination of both works as well.
- Social Security:
- a cut in benefits for all baby boomers who have not paid their fair share into the system. Payroll tax cuts in the 80's have created a situation in which the amount of money paid into the system is not enough to cover the benefits baby boomers are asking for. They need to receive the benefits they paid for and everyone else needs to take a payroll tax increase to pay for the benefits of future generations. Such that if a 66 year old is about to retire and they have paid $100,000 into social security over their career then they will get that, the employer contribution, and then the money is adjusted for inflation.
- Laws forbidding congress or the president from using social security as a piggy bank for expensive projects such as "Star Wars"
- Welfare reform
- Mandatory drug testing
- The U.S. government reserves the right to put all people on welfare to work. If you need government assistance that is find but you still need to be productive. There are a lot of places in this country that need to be cleaned up, and for many on welfare that is their own community. It is only fair to ask those who are living off the governments dime to contribute back to the community. In essence mandatory volunteer service.
- Maintain the welfare framework established in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. States should not be awarded extra money every time another person signs onto welfare. Keep the flat rate system and allow the states to manage welfare in their local regions
- Military
- Osama is dead and the most dangerous Taliban members are no longer in Afghanistan. We need to pull out of that country and not waste resources on it.
- No more foreign wars over things that honestly don't concern us. Nobody in America really cared about Libya before we bombed it. We have too many issues domestically to be wasting huge sums of money fighting wars in countries that don't pose a threat.
- Stop the purchase of unnecessary equipment and technology. there is no reason for the U.S. air force to just sit with hundreds of planes that aren't used.
- Internal government spending
- All elected officials should no longer be overly financially compensated. The benefits alone for many of them are worth more then the Average Americans salary. They are volunteer elected officials, there is no reason they should be paid what they are. Most of them are quite wealthy anyway. To be fair those earning $250,000 or less should be compensated for the money they lost by not working.
- Government employees should not take pay cuts. When compared to the private sector government employees are underpaid. Many will be quick to point I'm wrong here but government employees are mostly professionals. when government professionals are compared to private professionals their pay is far less then their private counterparts.
- However stop promising these ridiculous pensions. the average American doesn't get paid by their employer after they retire so why should Joe Lawyer for the government. The government can't afford these pensions and its not fair to private workers who have to pay for them. I want government employees to be fairly compensated but not with ridiculous pensions.
- Investments/miscellaneous:
- the government needs to subsidize the creation and implementation of alternative fuel. Electric cars are now available from popular car companies such as Nissan and Toyota for about $26000. The government needs to make it so that these cars cars can be affordable to everyday Americans. The sooner we adopt electric cars the sooner we don't have to rely on foreign oil. That also means no more middle east wars. If we didn't need oil we wouldn't have anywhere near as much need to be in the middle east. Electric cars would also eliminate gas costs for consumers who would be able to put that money toward their savings or spending to stimulate the economy.
- The government needs to consider selling its services to other countries. For example charging poorer nations to build infrastructure as a way of revenue building. It would help relations with foreign nations as well as create jobs for Americans and put money in the governments pocket.
- Health care
- Obamacare wasn't a bad thing it was just imperfect. It did ensure that everyone could get healthcare and required everyone to have it. However it did nothing to regulate the rising costs of healthcare. Regulation needs to be implemented that caps the amount of money that consumers pay for healthcare so that the Average American isn't getting gouged.
- Requiring healthcare isn't a bad thing. Its just like requiring car insurance. It makes sure that the tax payer doesn't have to pay or your healthcare if you go to the ER and you don't have healthcare. It forces everyone to be responsible and find a healthcare provider. It protects small business because they are exempt from providing a healthcare plan. However regulation needs to be implemented that forces the large and wealthy corporations to offer packages that their employees can afford.
- Medicare needs to be reformed but not eliminated.
- Regulation
- The financial industry requires heavy regulation
- The misdealing of the wall street finance industry are responsible for the current recession. (See the movie Inside Job for more info)
- Regulations need to implemented to prevent sub prime mortgaging, abuse of the derivatives market, prevention of monopolies, and to ensure the quality of the financial packages being distributed. Companies like Standard and Poor's are not qualified to judge the value of a financial package. These companies are biased and self serving. Further regulations need to be implemented on these companies to ensure that the ratings are accurate.
- Education
- Talented tenth: Post secondary education is becoming increasingly important for our economy. Affirmative Action is a flawed system and a talented tenth system would be more fair. In this system, the top 10% of every high school's student body would be given automatic admission into their State's public schools. This would ensure that Affirmative action wouldn't keep bright students out of Colleges as well as naturally make diversity. An intercity school with a high African American or Hispanic enrollment will be able to send its top students to college and at the same time other students from around the state aren't losing spots.
- Voucher System: A voucher system needs to be implemented so that Parents who live in a failing school district can send their kids elsewhere. This doesn't detract or take away money from the Public schools. It just allows families to have choices.
- Teacher's union: The teacher's union needs to abdicate some of its power. At this point the unions are too powerful and its too complicated to fire ineffective teachers. The teacher's union still needs to exist and serve the interest of teachers, but it needs to allow administrators to fire ineffective teachers
- The government needs to make teaching a more attractive career. If one looks at nations such as Japan or Scandinavian countries teachers are compensated a lot and only the best and brightest can become teachers. We need to increase the requirements necessary to become a teacher as a way of improving the education of our youth.
The key to social issues is compromise. There are many conflicting views on many of the following issues. I have tried to compile them in a way that will make everyone somewhat happy with trampling over what people believe.
- Gay Marriage: Make a federal mandate/amendment which creates civil unions. Many homosexuals want to be married for the legal rights that married people have such as inheritance. Those who have civil unions should have the same legal rights as traditionally married people. This isn't something that goes necessarily against religion because a union under the state isn't necessarily a union under god. The churches will be able to decide whether or not they are going to marry homosexuals and that will leave the decision with religious institutions. However homosexuals who wish to have the same rights as married people will be able to have civil unions. This will create a system in which those who want to be joined under the title of marriage will be married through their religion(church synagogue, mosque etc) Those who want to be joined outside of religion(hetero or homo sexual) will be given the title of civil union. Its up to each of the religions about whether or not they will perform unions of homosexuals.
- Abortion: Whether or not abortion is killing a human being is a large debate. I am proposing the following compromise. Abortions can be performed only in the following situations: Rape, the mother will die if she carries the baby to term, or the person pregnant is under the age of 14. Abortion isn't a form of birth control. It shouldn't be used because two people were irresponsible or unlucky but only when the situation is dire like in the above scenarios. Those who support abortion have their side of the compromise; People who really desperately need them will be able to get them. Everyone else will have to be sexually responsible. Those who are against abortions will have their side as well; abortions won't be used by people who were being sexually irresponsible.
- Illegal Aliens:
- These people broke the law, plain and simple. Sure it may have been for the hope of a better life. But that doesn't mean one can commit a crime. I can't go rob a bank because it will give me a better life. These people have broken U.S. law an should face some kind of consequence. Even though their lives aren't great here they still have children(who go to school on the tax payers dime) , they don't pay income taxes, and they use public services such as hospitals.
- The U.S. govt needs to deport illegals. To do this all thats necessary is to use the IRS. Cross reference who paid their taxes against the addresses in the U.S. Find out who didn't pay and then check their citizenship status. If they are a citizen then punish them for tax evasion. If not then they need to be deported.
- Along with this the birth right rules need to be changed. For a child to be considered a citizen, one parent must be a citizen. This should be implemented as a new rule. Those who were already born to illegals are grandfather claused out of the rule.
- New means of legal immigration need to be created for those living south of the Border. However it is important that these rules be enforced so that who and what comes in and out of the country is regulated. Its a matter of national security.
- Illegal immigration: Mexico does little to monitor the border we share. Its not our entire responsibility to secure that border. So I propose for every illegal alien who crosses the border we charge Mexico $10,000. It can go toward lowering the deficit and it will encourage the Mexican government to actually enforce its border. We have the military and economic leverage to force Mexico into complying.
- The end of Middle Eastern wars: No one cares about these wars. Stability in the middle east isn't going to happen through military force. These countries are going to change on there own. The revolutions in Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and many other countries prove that the citizens are dissatisfied. We shouldn't fight their revolutions for them. They have to do that themselves. However we can help them rebuild in the wake of these conflicts. That's how we make friends with nations. We can loan(keyword loan) these emerging countries money or even sell them U.S. services such as engineering. For example have an emerging nation pay the U.S. army corps of engineers to build its infrastructure. It could provide income to the U.S., build friendships with other nations, and make jobs.
- Import Tariff on Chinese goods
- Strict Anti North Korea stance: North Korea is a nation with an obvious Anti-American Agenda. The country is arming itself and making moves to disturb stability in the region. This nation is not only a threat to the U.S. but every other nation in the region. If we are going to use the military for anything it needs to be from protecting us from an already established threat.
- Decrease in U.S. role in NATO. Right now the U.S. is NATO. Without U.S. the alliance is substantially weaker. As such we end up taking the burden of fighting most of the battles. There needs to be a policy in which only 25% of a NATO operation can be carried out by the U.S. military. We can't fight battles for other countries. It just isn't fair to tax payers and the troops.
- U.S. states shouldn't be allowed to outsource the construction of public projects. This California bridge situation is ridiculous. Had the state contracted the job to Americans then the money would stay in our economy. Instead we've just given money to another nation. It may cost 6-10% more but in the long run that money will stay with us.
